I believe the calling to be an actor is special.
Acting heals the world, provides escapism, and connects people. It has the power to change people's lives.
But it can be challenging to 'make it' as an actor. And I want to change that.
In a business where uncertainty and rejection can be daunting, my goal is to be a source of hope and practical advice.
It's my calling to help you get where you want to go.
So how does a 10-year-old, straight-A student, and defacto babysitter for my cognitively disabled older sister become an actor?
I felt a deep need to escape. To be someone else.
When I discovered acting, I fell in love. It was the only place where I felt I truly belonged.
Acting became my safe place, my haven. It allowed me to be me and much more. I knew acting was the way to tell the stories within me.
I thought about quitting acting a bunch of times.
My BFA in Acting from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, though a top-tier acting program, did not prepare me for the real world.
I stayed in NYC after graduation trying to pursue my acting career while being a temp and a hostess.
I worked day and night to make ends meet and auditioned when I could.
Sometimes I would get asked to read for two different roles in the shows I was auditioning for. I thought it was a good thing, but in hindsight, it was because it wasn't clear who I was or what I did.
I was overwhelmed and lost.
In my heart I was an actor. So I stopped complaining and made some changes.
I knew there had to be a better way, so I decided to teach myself all things business.
I read everything I could get my hands on in terms of branding, marketing, sales, networking, you name it!
After about six months of self-education and creating systems and frameworks (did I mention I was a Type-A Virgo), I launched my new plan.
Six months after that, I -
After my recovery, within weeks I landed a new theatrical agent at a huge agency and was auditioning at a higher level than I ever did before. I booked more work that year than I ever had.
I knew I could help other actors get over their limiting beliefs, overwhelm and self-sabotage with the systems I created.
I wrote a book, built Business of Acting courses at multiple universities, and guest lectured all over the country.
All of that has culminated into Actor Insider.
