I have SOOOO many clients that come to me and think strategy and planning is busy work. I mean, things shift, right? So why bother planning anything!
This attitude is a doozy because it’s attached to 2 common myths actors buy into.
Let’s shatter those myths, shall we?
Have you ever said –
- I hope it works out, we’ll see!
- Everything could change tomorrow so why bother with planning.
- I’m just going to wing it and be me.
- I can’t predict the future, I’m just going with the flow.
Drum roll please…The Drifter is here!
The Drifter drifts through life with no plan because they like wingin’ it.
Look, I get the attraction to winging it – it’s WAAAYYY easier! And sometimes it works. But it doesn’t work for long. Winging it, with no plan, is just survival.
The Drifter buys into these two common myths as they’re religion and many of you believe them too.
Myth #1:
Goal setting is complicated and busywork
The Drifter obviously doesn’t like goal setting, they want to see where the universe will take them! And MANY people do think of goal setting as busywork. Which keeps you resisting it and in the same place.
The reason setting goals and sticking to them feel like busywork is because you’ve probably failed in the past. I get it. Of course, that feels like a waste of time.
My guess is you’ve never had a concrete system you could follow that was simple, creative, replicable and agile. Without one, you’ll most likely continue your acting journey stuck in old patterns.
You’ve just been missing the right tools, training and systems to support you. It starts with creating a planning system that feels authentic and adaptable to you. Because you’re right, you can’t predict the future.
And a goal without a plan is simply a dream. Just sayin’.
Myth #2:
You have to be a great organizer
Have you ever said – “I’m not good at that organizing stuff and I have no idea how to stay on track with it all.”
Well, guess what? You don’t have to be a great organizer to be successful. By believing that, you’re actually self-sabotaging your success.
That is merely an excuse to keep you from fully stepping into your greatness.
We’re not born knowing how to be organized or write goals or understand business – all of these are learned skills. You CAN learn how to be organized.
You just get to be willing to try something different.
So if you fall prey to these two myths, I invite you to be honest with yourself about it. No excuses, no blame, no shame. Just be real with yourself.
Then you get to open your heart to a new way of doing things. You CAN and WILL be good at business, planning and organizing. That’s exactly what I teach actors’ to do 😉
